Limerick Hospital – Precast Concrete Flooring

Flood Precast replace in-situ flat slab with Composite precast flat slab.

When Contractors JJ Rhatigan won the Main Contract to Construct a new six storey Hospital Block in Limerick the compliant design was for a traditional insitu flat slab construction.

The Main Contract provided for an option to Value Engineer and it was under this clause that long standing customer JJ Rhatigan approached us to help find a solution which provided the same, if not better Structural integrity and flexibility to the original design, only more economical and much faster to construct. In order to maximise build ability we opted to use the Flood Super Wideslab® prestressed precast concrete slab with in-situ concrete beam strips.

At each end of the precast floor unit we cast-in shear links which allows the slab to sit on the beam soffit without the requirement for bearing or without the requirement for a “Booth” on the beam. In essence we were able to provide a precast flat slab and this was vital to getting the scheme approved by the clients design team as any drop beams or booth beams would reduce the service zone and possibly conflict with some of the many services required in a modern hospital. Yesterday was our first day on site and as you can see the before and after photos tell the whole story. This hybrid precast flat slab system will;

  • Reduce the site steel fixing by 50%.
  • Reduce the program time by 30%.
  • Eliminate 50% of temporary propping.
  • Eliminate 60% of plywood.

Proving again that the Flood Super Wideslab® prestressed precast concrete flooring units is the ultimate replacement for traditional in-situ concrete slabs.
