Precast Concrete Flooring for Thermal Mass in Tipperary

Absences of voids in the our concrete floor means that the pre-stressed precast Super Wideslab® floor was denser and therefore more effective in terms of Thermal Mass.

Stewart’s Decentralised Government and Civic Offices in Tipperary have been short listed for the Irish Architecture awards 2013 and its all about sustainability.

This building then went on to win the ‘Public Sector Fit Out  Public Project of the Year’ 2013 Award.

To this end, Stewarts Builders, together with their Architects Coady Partnership and Engineers Tobin’s opted to retain Flood Precast to design the precast concrete flooring system.

Thermal Mass

The key criteria was to provide thermal mass in the structure for natural ventilation and to provide a high quality soffit finish which would be left exposed in what is a very prestigious Government Building.

Although Hollowcore Flooring was considered, the obvious choice was Flood Super Wideslab®, precast wide slab flooring units. The slabs are 2.4m wide which is twice as wide as a hollowcore slab therefore half the number of exposed joints.

The Flood Super Wideslab® wet-cast manufacturing process gives rise to a far superior quality soffit finish which was vital for this project, and the absence of voids in the floor meant that the prestressed precast Wideslab® floor was denser and therefore more effective in terms of Thermal Mass, sound reduction and vibration.
