BIM at Bede Campus, City of Sunderland College

Building Information Modelling is playing a key role in Flood Precast’s work on new buildings at the City of Sunderland College’s Bede Campus. The project involves the replacement of existing buildings by a new visual and performing arts complex, and a sports centre.

Seamless Planning
BIM enables Flood Precast to work seamlessly with other members of the project team in coordinating the planning and construction process, and improves productivity by allowing the easy retrieval of information. Construction risk management benefits from the detailed foreknowledge which BIM permits. Flood Precast has worked with other contractors to coordinate deliveries, reducing the project’s impact on the local community.

Exposed Class B soffit assists natural ventilation
Natural ventilation is a key design feature of the new buildings, and Flood Precast’s Class B soffit finish, which allows paint to be applied directly, ensures that the thermal mass of the exposed concrete can assist in maintaining a stable temperature.

500 Sq metres a day

2,500 square metres of Super Wideslab concrete were laid over a three month period at a typical rate of 500 square metres per day. Flood Precast also provided the four bespoke stairs which are a design feature within the building.

Investment in quality
The arts complex will have dance and drama studios, music, photography and media classrooms, and recording studios. The sports centre includes a sports hall, fitness suite, and sports science laboratory.
The College Principal, Anne Isherwood, told a local newspaper; “This is a very exciting time for Sunderland College. We are all looking forward to watching the new buildings take shape. The facilities will be fantastic, and existing and future students will reap the benefits of this investment in quality.”
