Wide Slab Flooring Solves Problem at Northwick Park Hospital

Flood Precast helped to ensure that a vital hospital construction project was able to meet its targets with their trademark wide slab flooring product Flood Super Wideslab®.

A badly-needed new Accident and Emergency department

The A&E department at Northwick Park Hospital in Brent, London was outdated and much too small – it was described as ‘overwhelmed’. Construction of a new department started in the autumn of 2013, to a very tight schedule.

Flood provides a solution to a design change

The original plan was for an in-situ type deck floor, but this needed to be changed to get the job back on programme. The clients engineer proposed an Omnia type construction but Flood were able quickly to propose, design and engineer a solution using Flood Super Wideslab®.

This met the specification, saved money and (crucially) time, and also produced a better finish. The design called for a good quality soffit finish as the surface will be exposed and on view. Flood Precast’s Class B finish provides this whilst also contributing a thermal mass effect. The clients were delighted with this swift and effective problem-solving response.

A fast turnaround

Flood Precast’s contribution to the project was completed on time and within budget, taking only five weeks from order to installation, a period which included the Christmas break.

Sustainability features

The project is designed with sustainability features such as photo-voltaic cells, LED lighting, and a combined heat and power unit.

Expanded capacity

It is expected that the new department will be able to deal with 150,000 attendances a year. It has been described as a ‘benchmark project’ which will set the standard for future Accident and Emergency provision. Construction is nearly complete, and the building will be opened within the next few weeks.
