Wide Slab Flooring at New Street Station Car Park

Flood Precast worked closely with Vinci Construction to come up with a floor solution on the new Multi story car park at New Street station next to the Bull ring in Birmingham.

The clients Network Rail and John Lewis required a very high quality exposed soffit finish to type B. Although Flood Precast do offer a Hollowcore plank with a exposed soffit finish the superior fair faced soffit finish of their trademark wide slab flooring product, Flood Super Wideslab®, delivered a product that exceeded their expectations.

Wide Slab vs. Hollowcore

The floor needed to be as thin as possible due to height restrictions for the building so a 100mm Flood Super Wideslab® was used with a 100mm structural screed on 7m spans for the 12,000m2 of flooring & ramps. Hollowcore planks were considered but the floor depth was too great using this system.

The project had several challenges besides the design, the site was live & very restricted so all deliveries had to be held several miles away from the City Centre site & called in when the crane was free & there was space for the lorries to park on site. All wagons delivering to site had to be FORS registered. The crane duties were limited so consideration had to be given to the weight of the planks in some areas.

A Concrete Flooring Solution

The programme was very tight, by installing the 2.4m wide Flood Super Wideslab® the fixing time for the precast flooring was halved saving over a month on programme over using the 1.2m wide Hollowcore planks.
