The innovative University Technical College Cambridge – a specialist science college for 14 to 19 year-olds is due to open this month a year after BAM Nuttall started construction on the site.
The £10 million College, sponsored by Cambridge Regional College and Cambridge University Health Partners & is located near some of the major industry partners in the project.
An integral part of the building is the 200mm deep Hollowcore planks with exposed soffits which allow the building to absorb the latent heat of the building & then gradually radiate it back.
Sustainability Features
- a combined heat and power plant to provide low-carbon energy
- photovoltaic cells
- and gravel beds to control rainwater run-off.
Hollowcore Flooring and Exposed Stair Soffits
Flood Precast worked closely with BAM on the design & delivery programme for the precast on the project & delivered a quality product that required very little finishing works onsite to the Hollowcore flooring and stair soffits which are all exposed.
BAM delivered this 3 three-storey building for the UTC on time adjacent to the £175m Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB), which was also completed by the contractor last year.
The building will include five super labs on the top floor, with three capable of joining together to emulate large-scale research conditions.
Flood Precast are working closely with BAM on several other projects including other UTC’s, Schools & a large retirement home near Oxford.

Flood engineers overcame several design issues to allow the floor to be installed un-propped…. impressed with the quality of the products especially the soffit finish
